Discover more about Moldavite Museum

The Moldavite Museum in Český Krumlov offers a captivating journey into the world of moldavites, unique green gemstones created by a meteorite impact approximately 15 million years ago. Formed when a meteorite struck in what is now Bavaria, the impact ejected molten material that cooled and solidified into these distinctive tektites, scattering them across southern Bohemia. The museum's interactive exhibits guide visitors through the entire story of moldavites, from the collision of planets and asteroids to the mass extinction of animals and the formation, properties, and uses of moldavites in jewelry. Explore the unique semi-precious moldavite gemstones, experience the creation of an impact crater, and even throw a virtual meteorite onto a globe to see the simulated consequences. Visitors can explore the museum's collection of moldavites from South Bohemian, Moravian, and Cheb regions, examining their basic shapes, surface types, and range of colors. The museum showcases the most representative samples of moldavite ever seen in public. The museum also delves into the wider context of moldavites, including meteorites, dangerous asteroids, and the extinction of large animals in Earth's history. The building itself, set in a mysterious gothic and renaissance space, enhances the visitor experience.
