Discover more about Benediktinský klášter Rajhrad

Rajhrad Monastery, located in the town of Rajhrad near Brno, stands as a testament to Moravia's rich history and cultural heritage. Founded in 1045 by Duke Bretislav I, it is the oldest Benedictine monastery in Moravia. Legend suggests a Basilian monastery, established by St. Cyril, may have existed here as early as the 10th century. The monastery's origins trace back to a cella (hermitage) founded by Bretislav I in 1028, later dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Throughout the centuries, the monastery has been rebuilt and renovated, most notably in the 18th century by Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, who transformed it into a stunning Baroque complex. The Abbey Church of Saints Peter and Paul boasts intricate designs and remarkable acoustics and is a favored venue for concerts. The monastery's historical library is a major highlight, housing over 65,000 volumes, some predating the monastery's founding. These include invaluable manuscripts linked to Queen Eliška Rejčka. Since 2005, the library has been part of the Moravian Literature Memorial, showcasing Moravian literary works from the 9th to the 20th centuries. Visitors can also explore a functional sacristy, a restored chapter hall, and adjoining exhibition rooms. After the internment of the Benedictines in 1950, the monastery was neglected but has since undergone extensive repairs and restorations since the Benedictine order returned in the 1990s. Today, visitors can wander through the picturesque gardens, where peacocks roam freely, adding a touch of whimsy to the serene atmosphere.
