Discover more about Brno Mosque

Nestled in the Štýřice district of Brno, the Brno Mosque opened in 1998 and holds the distinction of being the first mosque in the Czech Republic. In the early 1990s, the initial idea of constructing a dedicated building arose from a small circle of Muslims who gathered for prayers in rented spaces. Despite facing opposition during its planning and construction, the mosque has become a testament to Brno's cultural diversity and the integration of its Muslim community. The mosque's design reflects a blend of Islamic and modern architectural styles. The Brno-Centre Municipal Office placed specific conditions on the construction, stipulating that it should not have a minaret or dome and had to blend in with the surrounding buildings. The original plans included a glass dome, but this idea was abandoned for financial and practical reasons. Instead, the roof features small, rounded windows. The main entrance is adorned with a green mosaic and an Arabic inscription of the Shahada (the profession of faith). The interior features columns and arches that reflect an Islamic Oriental style. More than just a place of worship, the Brno Mosque serves as a cultural and educational center, hosting various events and activities that promote interfaith dialogue and understanding. It provides a space for the Muslim community to connect, socialize, and practice their faith. The mosque welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to appreciate its architecture, learn about Islamic culture, and experience a sense of tranquility.
