Discover more about Padowetz palace

The Padowetz Palace, located on the corner of Masarykova and Bašty streets in Brno, stands as an emblem of the city's rich history and architectural splendor. Built in the late Classical style between 1838 and 1839 by Lorenzo Padowetz, it was the first hotel in Brno and was entitled to be called “U císaře rakouského” (At the Austrian Emperor’s). The palace's towering presence and beautifully landscaped surroundings invite exploration of its centuries-old history. The palace now serves as a significant tourist attraction, captivating visitors with its intricate details, antique elements, and grand facade. Inside, one can admire elegant interiors that reflect the opulence of a bygone era, complete with exquisite frescoes and period furnishings. Guided tours often delve into the fascinating stories of past inhabitants, revealing the palace's role in Brno's cultural tapestry. In the late 19th century, the building was converted into a hotel. In 1935, the interior of the café, then called Alcron, was rebuilt according to the design of the architect Othmar Skrabal. The hotel successfully operated with a restaurant and café until 1939. The then owner of the house, Albína Padowcová, committed suicide after the arrival of the Germans due to her Jewish origin. After the liberation of Brno, the hotel and café were taken over by the repatriation center of the Ministry of Social Welfare. In April 1946, the Savings Bank of the City of Brno took over the operation again, the hotel was closed and began to function as an administrative building. In 1973, another floor was added to the hotel building with a superstructure with lower ceilings. Today, the Padowetz Palace is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, maintaining its original neoclassical features throughout the years.
