Castle Břeclav: A Neo-Gothic Gem with Ancient Roots

Castle Břeclav, though appearing as a 19th-century neo-Gothic ruin, has roots stretching back to the 11th century. Duke Břetislav I of Bohemia established a border castle here around 1041, protecting trade routes along the Dyje River. This strategic location made Břeclav an important administrative center in Moravia. Over the centuries, the castle has seen many owners and transformations. Originally a wooden structure, it was rebuilt in stone during the 13th century. The Liechtenstein family, who owned the castle for a significant period, oversaw major reconstructions, including the romantic neo-Gothic style seen today. The castle also played a role in significant historical events, including the Hussite Wars. Today, the castle is owned by the town of Břeclav, and its tower serves as an observation point. While largely unfurnished, the castle is open to visitors on specific days. The grounds offer a glimpse into the past, with remnants of the original 11th-century timber and clay walls still visible.
