Discover more about Morový sloup

Dominating the lower section of Masarykovo náměstí (Masaryk Square), the Morový sloup, or Plague Column, is a striking example of early Baroque artistry and a poignant reminder of Znojmo's history. Constructed between 1679 and 1682, the column commemorates the cessation of a major plague epidemic that ravaged the region. It is believed to stand on a site formerly used for executions. The column's design incorporates a base of shell limestone adorned with the motif of Saint Rosalia. Inscriptions with chronograms and niches for lamps decorate the base. One Latin inscription translates to: “Savior of the sick – pray for this city – fighting with the plague – dedicate this work to you”. Uniquely, the column features Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Znojmo, alongside the more typical figures of Saint Florian, Saint Roch, and Saint Sebastian. Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, is depicted as a Roman officer with a vessel for extinguishing flames. Saint Roch is represented as a man in priestly robes with a staff and a dog, referencing the legend of his survival during the plague due to his dog's loyalty. Saint Sebastian is portrayed as a near-naked man tied to a tree, pierced by arrows. The Morový sloup represents a key point in the evolution of Marian plague columns, bridging the artistic styles of Mannerism and the 19th century. Its presence serves not only as a historical marker but also as a testament to the city's resilience and faith in the face of adversity.
