Discover more about Museum of Applied Arts

Housed in a striking Renaissance Revival building dating back to 1882, the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno stands as a testament to the city's rich artistic and industrial heritage. Founded in 1873 and inspired by the Viennese Museum of Art and Industry, it is one of the oldest museums of its kind in Bohemia and Moravia. The building itself was designed by Johann Georg von Schön, the museum's first director, and was envisioned as a space for collection storage, exhibitions, and lectures. Throughout its history, the museum has undergone several transformations. After suffering damage during World War II, it was reconstructed in a functionalist style by architect Bohuslav Fuchs. A major restoration project completed in 2021 brought significant architectural alterations and introduced a new concept: ART DESIGN FASHION. This concept emphasizes the connection between these disciplines, showcasing Czech designers and their work. The museum's collections span from the Middle Ages to the present day, featuring a diverse range of applied arts. Visitors can explore displays of glass, ceramics, porcelain, textiles, furniture and metalware. Permanent exhibitions include "ART DESIGN FASHION", "ART IS HERE: New Art", and "Josef Hoffmann: Inspirations". The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience for visitors. The interior renovations incorporated contemporary designs into the museum's structure, featuring work by Czech designers like Maxim Velčovský and Eva Eisler. The museum also features a lecture room and a Children's Studio.
