Discover more about Zderad Column

The Zderad Column stands as an enigmatic historical landmark in Brno, Czech Republic. Located at the end of Křenová Street, on the banks of the Svitava River, its presence evokes a sense of mystery and intrigue. The column's Gothic style hints at a rich history, yet scholars have been unable to definitively determine when, by whom, or why it was built. Local legend suggests the column was erected by Czech King Vratislav II to commemorate the spot where Zderad of Švábenice was murdered in the summer of 1091. According to the tale, King Vratislav II was campaigning against his rebellious brother Konrad and had laid siege to Brno. Zderad, the King's right-hand man, advised that the King's son Břetislav should encamp by the water's edge. This angered Břetislav, who felt insulted by Zderad's suggestion. The following morning, Břetislav invited Zderad to a meeting, where he and his army ambushed and killed the knight. Overcome with grief and remorse, the King punished his son and erected the column on the site of Zderad's death. While the legend provides a compelling narrative, the true origins of the Zderad Column remain elusive. Its enduring presence continues to captivate visitors, serving as a reminder of Brno's dynamic and storied past. The column stands as a testament to the architectural styles that have shaped Brno over the centuries.
