Discover more about Bílá strž

Bílá strž, or White Gorge, is a captivating waterfall nestled within the Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic. This natural wonder is the highest waterfall in the Šumava region, boasting a 13-meter cascade formed by several steps, the highest of which measures 7 meters. The waterfall is located in the valley of Bílý potok (White Stream) at an altitude of 940 meters. The waterfall is part of the Bílá strž National Nature Reserve, established in 1972, encompassing 79.2 hectares. This reserve protects not only the waterfall but also the remains of a primeval forest, characterized by old-growth beech and fir trees. Some of these trees are up to 240 years old, with trunks reaching up to 95 cm in diameter. The Bílý stream has carved unique features into its bed, including so-called "giant pots" – large, smooth boulders sculpted by the swirling water. According to a local legend from the 17th century, a forester living near the waterfall made a deal with the devil to gain extraordinary shooting skills. This legend is said to have inspired Carl Maria von Weber to compose his opera "The Freeshooter". The surrounding Šumava National Park offers a wealth of activities, including hiking and cycling. The park is known as the "green roof of Europe" due to its extensive forests, glacial lakes and peat bogs.
