Kratochvíle State Chateau: A Renaissance Jewel

Kratochvíle State Chateau, a breathtaking manor house, invites tourists to explore its rich history and stunning Renaissance architecture. Situated in the picturesque South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, near Netolice, this architectural gem was designed in the mid-16th century by Baldassare Maggi, commissioned by William of Rosenberg. The chateau was intended to be a summer residence built in the style of Italian country houses. The chateau features a rectangular complex surrounded by a moat and a wall embellished with allegorical paintings. The reception room boasts a vault adorned with hunting and mythological scenes and a beautiful Renaissance fireplace. The Golden Hall, known for its outstanding acoustic features, is still used for concerts and wedding ceremonies. The chateau is surrounded by a geometrically laid out Renaissance garden. The estate offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the nobility during its heyday. The picturesque gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, with scenic views that are ideal for photography. As you explore the grounds, take in the serene ponds and unique landscape designs that create a peaceful atmosphere. Originally, a farmyard called Leptáč stood in its place. In 1569, Wilhelm of Rosenberg donated it to Jakub Krčín of Jelčany, who built a new yard with a hunting gamepark. Rosenberg liked the yard so much that he traded it with Krčín for the town of Sedlčany in 1579. After the death of Wilhelm of Rosenberg, his successor Peter Vok was forced to sell the chateau to Emperor Rudolf II in 1601 due to financial issues. The Emperor then gave the chateau to the Eggenberg family, and later, in 1719, it was acquired by the Schwarzenberg family. Today, Kratochvíle houses an exhibition of Czech puppet and animated films with original works by notable Czech producers. Visitors can explore the elegant interiors, including the Golden Hall, and admire the Renaissance garden with fountains. The chateau's Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is also worth seeing. The educational trail called “Historic landscape of Netolice” runs directly around the castle, and is accessible by bike.
