    Discover more about Maiden stone

Dívčí Kámen, also known as Maiden's Stone, is a captivating medieval castle ruin in South Bohemia, Czechia. Founded in 1349 by the House of Rosenberg, the castle stands on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Křemže brook and the Vltava River. King Charles IV granted permission to build the castle to four brothers from the Rosenberg family. Dívčí Kámen was once one of the largest and best-preserved medieval monuments in the Czech Republic. The main building featured a three-story palace with three rooms on each level. Although modern for its time, it never became a permanent noble residence, serving mainly as an administrative center and a symbol of the family's power. In 1394, King Václav IV was held at the castle for a short time. By 1506, the castle was abandoned due to high maintenance costs, and its garrison was moved to Český Krumlov. Today, Dívčí Kámen is owned by the town of Křemže, which is gradually preserving the site. Visitors can explore the extensive ruins, enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, and even use the fireplace beneath the castle for roasting sausages. Cultural events and weddings are sometimes held at the castle. The area surrounding the castle is a nature reserve, part of the Blanský Forest Protected Landscape Area. Nearby, you can also visit a Celtic oppidum, one of Europe's most significant Celtic sites.
