Discover more about řopík (válečné opevnění)

The řopík near Kubova Huť is a tangible reminder of Czechoslovakia's pre-World War II efforts to protect its borders. Constructed between 1937 and 1938, these light fortifications were built in response to growing fears of invasion. The name 'řopík' comes from the abbreviation of the Directorate of Fortification Works (ŘOP), the organization that oversaw their construction. These bunkers were designed as part of a continuous defensive line, connecting individual strongholds to create a network of resistance. The line ran from Kubova Huť to Český Krumlov, passing through Horní Vltavice, Lenora, and Volary, following the Vltava River towards Želnava and then through the Blanský Forest to Krumlov. Each bunker was constructed from reinforced concrete, with the front wall and ceiling varying in thickness to withstand projectiles. They were equipped with embrasures for machine guns, barred entrances with armored doors, grenade chutes, and periscopes. A ventilation system ensured fresh air for the crew of 5-7 soldiers inside. After the Munich Agreement, many bunkers remained incomplete, and some were never even started. During the German occupation, the bunkers were tested for resistance, resulting in damage to some from explosives and gunfire. Today, around 250 řopíky still stand. This particular řopík is easily accessible and offers a glimpse into the past, complete with wooden walls inside.
