Discover more about Soumarské rašeliniště

Soumarské rašeliniště, nestled in the heart of Šumava National Park, offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Central Europe's most significant peat bog ecosystems. This enchanting area boasts diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and photographers. The 85-hectare peat bog has been evolving since the end of the Ice Age, approximately 9,000 years ago. Until 2000, the area was used for industrial peat extraction, which significantly altered the landscape. Today, the bog is undergoing revitalization to restore its original character. A 1.5-kilometer educational trail guides visitors through the bog, featuring wooden walkways that protect the delicate ecosystem. The trail leads to a 9.2-meter high, two-story observation tower, offering panoramic views of the entire bog, distant mountains, and the surrounding landscape. Along the way, information panels explain the formation of peat bogs and their role in the regional ecosystem. The trail is generally accessible from June to October to protect the endangered black grouse. Visitors can also explore historical military bunkers near the bog, adding an intriguing layer to the natural exploration.
