Water Castle Švihov: A Gothic Gem

Švihov Water Castle, located near Klatovy in the Úhlava River valley, is a remarkable example of a medieval fortress transformed into a late Gothic and early Renaissance castle. Built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries by Půta Švihovský of Rýzmberk, the castle boasts an ingenious water defense system, complete with moats fed by the Úhlava River and adjacent ponds. This design allowed the surroundings, including the inner courtyard, to be flooded quickly, making it one of the best fortresses of its time. The castle's history is rich with tales of nobility, sieges, and near demolition. After Půta Švihovský's death, the castle passed through various hands, including the Kavka of Říčany family and later the Czernin family. Despite facing demolition after the Thirty Years' War, the castle was saved and used for agricultural purposes until the 20th century. In the 1930s, Eugen Černín contributed to its preservation, and extensive restoration efforts began after World War II. Today, visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved interiors, including the chapel with Gothic sculptures, the ballroom with a Renaissance coffered ceiling, and the armory. The castle also features an exhibition hall with historical expositions and is famous for being a filming location for the beloved fairy tale, *Three Wishes for Cinderella*. Guided tours provide insights into the castle's history and architecture, while special events and exhibitions add to the visitor experience. Legends also surround Švihov Castle, including the tale of Mr. Půta, who was said to have been taken to hell by the devil for his cruelty. It is believed that his spirit and that of his wronged wife, Bohunka, still roam the castle, adding an element of mystery to its already enchanting atmosphere.
