The Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Svatý Kopeček is a prominent landmark visible from afar, beckoning visitors with its Baroque architecture and spiritual significance. Located approximately 8 km from the city center of Olomouc, this basilica has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The origins of the basilica trace back to 1629 when a local wine merchant, Jan Andrýsek, had a vision of the Virgin Mary and pledged to build a chapel in her honor. The initial chapel was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War but was quickly rebuilt. As the site's popularity grew, a larger church was commissioned, designed by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla and consecrated in 1679. The basilica's unique orientation faces the Hradisko Monastery, symbolizing a connection between the two. The basilica features a single-nave structure with transepts, a central dome, and lateral chapels. Side wings with statues of the twelve apostles and Saints Sebastian and Roch adjoin the church. The interior boasts impressive frescoes by Johann Christoph Handke and stucco work by Baldassar Fontana, making it one of the most beautiful Baroque interiors in Moravia. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a Minor Basilica in May 1995. Visitors can explore the basilica's beautiful interiors, enjoy panoramic views of Olomouc and the surrounding countryside, and hike the picturesque trails around Svatý Kopeček.
