Discover more about St. Procopius Basilica in Třebíč

The St. Procopius Basilica, or Bazilika svatého Prokopa in Czech, is a magnificent church located in Třebíč, Czech Republic. Its origins trace back to the early 12th century with a chapel dedicated to St. Benedict. Between 1240 and 1280, the chapel was transformed into the grand basilica we see today, blending Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The basilica was originally dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary but was rededicated to St. Procopius in 1704. The basilica features a three-aisled structure with two imposing towers. Inside, the main nave is separated from the side aisles by alternating pillars supporting pointed arches. The choir showcases intricate sandstone blocks. The Abbot's Chapel contains original Gothic paintings, some of the oldest frescoes in Moravia. The crypt, the burial place of monks and monastery founders, is one of the best-preserved areas. In 2002, it was declared a national cultural monument, and in 2003, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Jewish Quarter. Today, visitors can explore the basilica and learn about its history and architectural significance.
