Getting There

    From Jihlava's city center, follow the red-marked tourist trail towards Rantířov. The path leads through the valley of the Jihlava River for approximately 3 km. The trail is well-marked but includes some steep sections. No entrance fees or special transport are required.

  • Public Transport

    Take trolleybus B or C from the Jihlava city center to the S. K. Neumann stop. From there, follow the red-marked trail for approximately 3 km towards Zaječí skok. A 30-minute ticket on Jihlava public transport costs 22 CZK.

Zaječí skok, translated as Hare's Leap, is a captivating natural reserve located near Jihlava. Established in 1933, it holds the distinction of being the oldest nature reserve in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The reserve protects a series of striking rocky cliffs that rise up to 30 meters above the Jihlava River. These cliffs, stretching for about 170 meters, offer panoramic views of the picturesque valley below. The area is a haven for diverse plant and animal life. Sheltered, shady spots host mountain and subalpine species, while sun-drenched areas are home to warmth-loving plants. Keep an eye out for the rock fern, drooping rose, and various liverworts. The reserve also provides a habitat for kingfishers, otters, eagle owls and dippers. The reserve's name is derived from a local legend about a knight who, while hunting, pursued a hare to the edge of the cliff. The hare leaped to its safety, but the knight was unable to stop his horse, resulting in both plunging to their doom. It is said that the imprint of the knight's horse's hoof can still be seen on a stone at the site. Today, Zaječí skok is a popular destination for hiking and nature enthusiasts. The red-marked trail leads from Jihlava (approximately 3 km) or Rantířov (about 2.5 km). The terrain can be steep in places, but the stunning views and unique natural environment make it a rewarding experience.
