Discover more about Náměstí Republiky, Plzeň

Náměstí Republiky, or Republic Square, has been the heart of Pilsen since the city's founding in the late 13th century. Historically known as Velké náměstí (Great Square) and náměstí Svobody (Liberty Square), it has always been a focal point for social, cultural, and political life. The square's generous dimensions, approximately 193 x 139 meters, were created by intentionally leaving out two blocks from the original Gothic grid of the city. Dominating the square is the impressive Gothic St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, boasting the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic, reaching over 102 meters. Construction of the cathedral likely began around the same time as the city's founding. Other significant buildings include the Renaissance Town Hall, and a Marian plague column dating back to 1681. The surrounding buildings showcase a mix of architectural styles, including medieval burgher houses and the Empire-style Principálovský House. Throughout its history, the square has been modified. A graveyard that once surrounded the cathedral was removed in 1789. In the early 19th century, smaller structures and objects that complemented the church were removed. Today, Náměstí Republiky remains a bustling hub, hosting markets, festivals, and other events, making it a must-see destination for visitors.
