Nemours Estate offers a captivating journey into the lifestyle of the American elite during the Gilded Age. Industrialist Alfred I. du Pont created Nemours between 1909 and 1910 as a testament to his love for his second wife, Alicia. The estate is named after the French town of Nemours, reflecting the du Pont family's ancestral ties. The centerpiece of the estate is a 47,000-square-foot mansion designed in the Louis XVI style of French architecture by Carrère and Hastings. Inside, visitors can admire rare 18th-century French furniture, notable antiques, and an eclectic collection of art and tapestries. Highlights include a Louis XVI musical clock and a clock made for Marie Antoinette. The 200 acres of grounds feature formal French gardens inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The gardens boast fountains, pavilions, and a one-acre reflecting pool. The Long Walk connects the pool to the mansion, and other features include the Temple of Love, the Boxwood Garden, and the Colonnade. Visitors can also explore the Chauffeur's Garage, which houses a collection of vintage automobiles. Nemours Estate underwent a significant restoration from 2005 to 2008, ensuring the preservation of its original splendor. Today, the Nemours Foundation manages the estate, fulfilling Alfred I. du Pont's vision of sharing it with the public.
