Nemours Estate: A Gilded Age Masterpiece

Nemours Estate, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a testament to the vision and philanthropy of Alfred I. du Pont. Constructed between 1909 and 1910 as a gift for his second wife, Alicia, the estate is named after the French town of Nemours, reflecting the du Pont family's ancestral ties. The 200-acre estate showcases a magnificent 18th-century French neoclassical mansion, boasting 105 rooms and nearly 47,000 square feet. The mansion's design, by Carrère and Hastings, blends Louis XVI and Italian Renaissance styles, housing a remarkable collection of 18th-century French furniture, European master paintings, and notable antiques. Visitors can explore 77 rooms filled with art and historical artifacts. Highlights include a Louis XVI musical clock and a clock made for Marie Antoinette. The formal gardens, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, are among the grandest in the United States. The gardens feature a one-acre Reflecting Pool, the Colonnade, and the Temple of Love, with a statue of Diana sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The Boxwood Garden offers a French parterre design with a central faun fountain. The grounds also include a Chauffeur's Garage with a collection of vintage automobiles. After Alfred I. du Pont's death in 1935, a trust was established to support children's healthcare, leading to the creation of the Nemours Children's Hospital adjacent to the estate. The estate opened to the public in 1977 and underwent a $39 million restoration from 2005 to 2008, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, Nemours Estate welcomes visitors to explore its mansion, gardens, and grounds, offering a unique glimpse into the lifestyle of a prominent American family and their contributions to society.
