Discover more about Lewes Lighthouse

The Delaware Breakwater East End Light, or Lewes Lighthouse, is more than just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of Lewes's identity as the 'First Town in the First State'. Erected in 1885, the lighthouse replaced the Cape Henlopen Beacon and has been a sentinel for ships entering the Delaware Bay. Standing at 49 feet tall, the lighthouse is a conical brown tower with a black lantern, constructed with a cast-iron caisson foundation embedded into the breakwater. Its original purpose was to mark the entrance to the inner breakwater harbor and warn ships of the tip of Cape Henlopen. The lighthouse is known for its fourth-order Fresnel lens, which is still housed in the lantern room. Over the years, the Lewes Lighthouse earned the moniker 'the noisiest light on the bay' due to its foghorn's near-constant sounding during harsh winters. Although the light was deactivated in 1996, it remains a cherished landmark. Today, visitors can admire the lighthouse from Cape Henlopen State Park or get a closer look through boat tours offered by Cape Water Tours. These tours often include a rare opportunity to step inside the historic beacon.
