Discover more about Beach Plum Island Nature Preserve

Beach Plum Island Nature Preserve, a serene and dynamic coastal environment, stands as one of Delaware's last undeveloped barrier islands. Established in 1990, this preserve aims to protect and maintain its unique barrier spit, encompassing a variety of habitats including beach, dune, tidal marsh, and riverine ecosystems. This sensitive ecosystem is susceptible to damage from unregulated human activity, so designated areas are in place for public use. Visitors can explore the island's natural beauty through designated trails, offering opportunities for wildlife watching, surf fishing, and enjoying the tranquil landscape. The island is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 22 species of birds frequently observed, including Sanderlings, Ruddy Turnstones, and various terns and plovers. The eBird database lists over 50 additional species recorded at Beach Plum Island. Terrapin nesting activity is also observed within the preserve. The preserve's beach provides drive-on access for surf fishing with a permit, but the beach is narrow, requiring caution due to rising tides. A pedestrian trail from the parking lot's southwest corner leads to the Broadkill River, offering access for bank fishing and crabbing. The island's management plan focuses on balancing recreational use with the protection of its natural resources.
