Long before European settlers arrived, the area now known as Cape Henlopen State Park was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Lenape. These indigenous peoples utilized the rich natural resources of the area for fishing, hunting, and gathering. Artifacts like arrowheads and pottery fragments have been discovered, revealing a deep-rooted history and cultural connection to the land.

Cape Henlopen was named by the Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen Mey in the early 17th century. The cape served as a crucial landmark for sailors navigating the Delaware Bay. During the colonial era, the cape was part of the New Sweden colony before coming under English control.
