Discover more about Lewes Town Clock

The Lewes Town Clock is a prominent landmark in the heart of historic Lewes, Delaware. Situated at the corner of 2nd Street and Bank Street, this modern clock commemorates the town's founding as the first settlement in Delaware in 1631. The clock was unveiled on February 12, 2022, after a successful fundraising campaign led by local residents. The idea for the clock was sparked by residents Steve and Lorrie Walker, who were inspired by a similar clock they saw in Warrenton, Virginia. They partnered with the Greater Lewes Foundation to raise the necessary funds. The Verdin Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, a family business that has been making clocks since 1842, was chosen to construct the clock. The Lewes Town Clock stands approximately 15 feet tall. Its design incorporates architectural elements that complement the surrounding historic buildings, giving it a timeless appearance. The clock's faces display the town motto, 'The First Town in the First State,' and the inscription 'Lewes, DE Est. 1631'. The clock serves as a reminder of Lewes' significant role in Delaware's history and its enduring appeal.
