Holts Landing State Park, a 205-acre gem on the Indian River Bay, provides a serene escape with a rich history. Once a family farm owned by the Holts, the land was sold to the state in 1957 and opened as a park in 1965. The park's history extends back to pre-colonial times, with Native Americans harvesting seafood and hunting in the area. Today, Holts Landing is known for its diverse landscapes, including bay shore beaches, grassy fields, and hardwood forests. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as crabbing from the park's dedicated pier, fishing, clamming, and boating. The park also features hiking trails like the ADA-accessible Seahawk Trail, offering views of salt marshes, maritime forests, and wildlife. For those seeking relaxation, Holts Landing offers picnic areas, a playground, and a pavilion with a fire pit available for rent. Summer concerts and Family Fun Nights add to the park's appeal. The Assawoman Canal, dug by hand in the 1890s, runs through the park, offering a glimpse into the area's past. While primitive group camping is available, visitors should check for current availability and reservation policies.
