Finns Point Lighthouse: A Beacon of History and Nature

Finns Point Lighthouse, constructed in 1876, stands as a testament to the region's rich maritime history. Located within the Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, near Fort Mott State Park in Pennsville, New Jersey, the lighthouse offers visitors a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. The components were manufactured by the Kellogg Bridge Company in Buffalo, New York, and then transported by railcar and mule-drawn wagons to the site. The wrought-iron tower rises 115 feet and contains a 119-step spiral staircase and an 11-step ladder leading to the lantern room. The light was originally a 150,000 candlepower kerosene vapor light. While the lighthouse is not always open for tours, visitors can explore the grounds and admire the structure's unique design. The surrounding Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge offers trails for hiking and birdwatching, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene environment. The refuge is a critical stop for migratory birds and provides habitat for diverse wildlife. The lighthouse has a rich history, including periods of operation, automation, and even abandonment. It was deactivated in 1950 after the channel it marked was altered. Local efforts led to its restoration in the 1980s. Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service owns the lighthouse and manages the surrounding refuge.
