Sunset Beach: History, Diamonds, and Sunsets

Sunset Beach, nestled on the Cape May Peninsula in Lower Township, New Jersey, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Situated where the Delaware Bay converges with the Atlantic Ocean, this beach is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place where you can witness breathtaking sunsets, explore the remnants of a concrete ship, and even discover your own 'Cape May diamond'. Sunset Beach has a rich history, evolving from a 19th-century steamship landing to a popular tourist destination. In the 1800s, it served as the primary arrival point for visitors to Cape Island, with passengers disembarking onto smaller boats to reach the shore. Later, it transitioned into a steamship dock, featuring a wooden pier. The beach's unique charm is further enhanced by the presence of the SS Atlantus, an experimental concrete ship that ran aground in 1926. This ship, originally intended to create a ferry dock, became a permanent fixture of the shoreline after a storm broke it free from its moorings. One of the beach's most alluring features is the opportunity to find 'Cape May diamonds'. These aren't actual diamonds, but rather clear quartz crystals that have been washed down from the Delaware River. Polished by the waves and sand, they resemble diamonds and can be found scattered along the beach. Sunset Beach is also known for its Evening Flag Ceremony, a tradition that began in 1973. Every evening from Memorial Day through September, and on Saturdays in September, a flag-lowering ceremony takes place, honoring veterans with the playing of Taps as the sun sets over the Delaware Bay. The flags flown are often casket flags of deceased veterans, adding a deeply moving element to the experience. Beyond its natural and historical attractions, Sunset Beach offers practical amenities such as parking, shops, and a grille (open in season). Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like the Cape May Lighthouse and the WWII Lookout Tower, which was part of the Delaware Harbor Defense system.
