Discover more about Rockford Park

Rockford Park, located in Wilmington's Highlands neighborhood, is a testament to urban reform and the vision of philanthropist William Poole Bancroft. Established in 1889, Bancroft donated 59 acres of his property, and convinced the du Pont family to contribute an additional 9 acres, to create a green escape for city dwellers. The park quickly became a haven for mill workers and their families seeking respite from the noise and grime of the industrial era. The park's most recognizable feature is the Rockford Tower, constructed in 1901. This historic stone water tower, standing 115 feet tall, was designed by Theodore A. Leisen in both Italian Renaissance Revival and Gothic architectural styles. Built from Brandywine 'Blue Rock', the tower served a dual purpose: to provide water for the growing city and to offer an observation deck with stunning views of the city and the Brandywine River. The tower is open for tours on summer Sundays and during Monday evening summer concerts. Today, Rockford Park continues to be a vibrant community hub. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including walking, jogging, picnicking, and playing tennis. The park also features baseball fields, wooded paths for hiking and biking, and a popular off-leash dog park. The open green spaces are perfect for flying kites or simply relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Several memorials dot the landscape, including the Canby Seat, a granite bench honoring botanist William M. Canby, and a statue of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont. Rockford Park hosts community events such as free summer concerts and the annual Wilmington Flower Market.
