Brandywine Springs Park, New Castle County Travel Guide

Brandywine Springs Park, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a 62.35-acre parkland that offers a diverse experience for visitors. Its history is as rich and layered as the landscape itself. Long before becoming a public park, the area was significant for the Lenape Native Americans. In 1826, a four-story hotel was built to attract visitors to the mineral springs believed to have healing properties. Notable guests included John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and Daniel Webster. However, the hotel's popularity declined, and it was later transformed into a military boarding school that burned down in 1853.In the late 1880s, Richard Crook saw a new vision for Brandywine Springs, turning it into an amusement park. The park featured attractions such as a funhouse, pony rides, a dance hall, a lake, a bandstand, and an early wooden roller coaster. Trolley lines were built to bring visitors from Wilmington to the park, which became a popular destination for families. The amusement park era ended in 1923, and the park was neglected for decades.In 1952, Brandywine Springs was established as the first state park in Delaware. It later transitioned to a New Castle County park in 1970. Today, visitors can explore the park's historical remnants, including low-lying foundations along the crushed-stone pathway. The park also offers modern amenities such as softball fields, a basketball court, picnic areas, play structures, and pavilions. A historical nature walk is being developed by the Friends of Brandywine Springs to showcase the park's unique history.
