Completed in 1901, the 115-foot tower was a joint project by the Wilmington Board of Park Commissioners and the Board of Water Commissioners. Designed by engineer Theodore Leisen, it blends Italian Renaissance Revival and Gothic styles.The tower was built to meet the growing city's need for a better water supply and to provide an observatory for the public. Constructed from local Brandywine 'Blue Rock' stone, the tower housed a half-million-gallon water tank. A climb to the top rewards visitors with stunning views of Wilmington and the surrounding Brandywine Valley.Philanthropist William Poole Bancroft, who donated much of the land for Rockford Park, envisioned the park as a way to improve the lives of the working class during rapid industrialization. Today, Rockford Park features tennis courts, walking trails, and open meadows. Rockford Tower stands as a symbol of Wilmington's industrial heritage and its dedication to providing public green spaces. The tower is open to the public on certain days during the summer for special events and for private tours.
