Discover more about Fort DuPont State Park

Fort DuPont State Park, located just south of Delaware City, Delaware, is a 322-acre park where history and recreation meet. Named after Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont, a Civil War naval hero, the site was strategically important for coastal defense from the Civil War through World War II. The park's location at the mouth of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal and the Delaware River made it ideal for protecting port cities like Wilmington and Philadelphia from enemy ships. Originally built as an auxiliary to Fort Delaware, the site evolved over the years to include rifle, mortar, and rapid-fire batteries. After its weaponry became obsolete, Fort DuPont transitioned into a training facility. In 1992, a portion of the land was dedicated as a state park, offering a variety of activities. Today, visitors can explore the park's rich history through a self-guided trail that winds past the remains of military batteries. The Riverview Trail, a pet-friendly path, meanders along the Delaware River, offering prime birdwatching opportunities and glimpses into the fort's past. For recreation, the park provides opportunities for picnicking, fishing, boating, hiking, and sports like tennis and basketball.
