Sunset Beach: History, Shipwrecks, and 'Diamonds'

Sunset Beach, nestled on the Cape May Peninsula in Lower Township, New Jersey, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Situated where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, the beach is famous for its exquisite sunsets that paint the sky with vibrant colors. One of the beach's most distinctive features is the S.S. Atlantus, an experimental concrete ship that ran aground in 1926. Launched in 1918, the Atlantus was intended for service in World War I, but after the war, it was used for transporting troops and coal. The ship was later purchased with the intention of creating a ferry dock, but a storm broke it free from its moorings, leaving it stranded just off the coast. Today, the wreck serves as a visible landmark and a haven for seabirds. Sunset Beach is also renowned for its 'Cape May Diamonds'. These are not actual diamonds, but rather smooth, clear quartz pebbles that have been washed down from the Delaware River over centuries. Beachcombers can often be seen searching for these sparkling stones, which can be cut and polished into jewelry. In addition to its natural and historical attractions, Sunset Beach hosts a flag-lowering ceremony each evening from Memorial Day through August, and on Saturdays in September. This ceremony honors veterans, with the flags flown having been taken from the caskets of deceased service members. Sunset Beach has a rich history as a landing spot for visitors coming to Cape Island in the 1800s. Steamships would dock, and passengers would disembark into smaller boats to reach the shore. Later, a wooden pier was constructed, and horse-drawn taxis or rail cars transported visitors to Cape May.
