Special collections include artifacts from the Underground Railroad, a growing collection of African Americana, and the works of one of Delaware's first female photographers. The library also houses a letter from George Washington to Caesar Rodney and the papers of Senator William V. Roth. The Research Library is located in a former Artisans Savings Bank, a 1930s Art Deco building. The Delaware Historical Society purchased it in 1971. The building's façade was recently restored.
