Discover more about Southbridge Wilmington Wetlands Park (West Entrance)

The Southbridge Wilmington Wetlands Park is a transformative project that has revitalized the Southbridge neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware. Completed in 2022 after more than 15 years of planning, this 30-acre park serves as both a recreational space and a critical piece of green infrastructure. For decades, the Southbridge community faced chronic flooding due to its low-lying location and aging infrastructure. During major storms, streets and homes would flood with millions of gallons of stormwater and sewage. The Wetlands Park was conceived as a solution to this persistent problem, with the community identifying the location as ideal for a wetlands park in 2006. The park features a 20-acre stormwater management facility and restores 14 acres of wetlands. It's engineered to store over 2 million gallons of stormwater, significantly reducing flooding in the surrounding area. The park also improves water quality by filtering runoff and restoring the tidal wetland with diverse plant species. Beyond its environmental benefits, the Southbridge Wilmington Wetlands Park offers a range of recreational amenities. An ADA-accessible boardwalk traverses the park, connecting Southbridge to the Riverfront and providing a scenic pathway for residents and visitors. The park also serves as a habitat for various wildlife species, including sunfish, heron, egrets, dragonflies, and turtles.
