Discover more about The Grand Opera House

The Grand Opera House, affectionately known as The Grand, stands as a testament to Wilmington's rich history and commitment to the performing arts. Opened in 1871 as a Masonic Temple and auditorium, the building's Second Empire architectural style, designed by Thomas Dixon, showcases a stunning cast-iron facade adorned with Masonic symbols. The central pediment features an Eye of Providence, a nod to its Masonic origins. Throughout its history, The Grand has hosted a wide array of performances, including operas, symphonies, Victorian melodramas, minstrel shows, and vaudeville acts. Renowned entertainers such as Ethel Barrymore, Buffalo Bill Cody, and John Philip Sousa have graced its stage. In the early 20th century, it transitioned into a movie theater, but eventually closed in 1967. A community-led effort saved The Grand from demolition, and it reopened in 1971. Following extensive restoration, it was rededicated in 1973 and has since become a premier performing arts center, partnering with organizations like the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, OperaDelaware, and the First State Ballet Theatre. Today, The Grand hosts over 300 events annually, offering a diverse program of music, dance, theater, and comedy. Recent performances include ABBA tribute bands, Celtic Thunder, and showings of Mrs. Doubtfire. Visitors can admire the Grand's architecture and attend a performance. The main stage, Copeland Hall, seats over 1,100 people. The Grand also provides educational and community engagement opportunities, including dance parties, open mic nights, and summer camps.
