Nemours Estate: A Gilded Age Masterpiece

Nemours Estate, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a breathtaking 200-acre estate showcasing a French neoclassical mansion and elaborate formal gardens. Industrialist Alfred I. du Pont built Nemours between 1909 and 1910 as a gift for his second wife, Alicia, and named it after the French town associated with his ancestor, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. The mansion, designed by Carrère and Hastings, boasts 105 rooms spread over four floors, covering nearly 47,000 square feet. Inside the mansion, visitors can admire rare 18th-century French furniture, notable antiques, and an eclectic collection of art and tapestries. Highlights include a Louis XVI musical clock and a clock made for Marie Antoinette. The Chauffeur's Garage displays a collection of vintage automobiles, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century luxury. The gardens at Nemours Estate are among the finest examples of French formal gardens in North America. Inspired by the gardens of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, they feature fountains, a one-acre reflecting pool, and sculptures. The Long Walk connects the pool to the mansion, and other garden features include the Temple of Love, the Boxwood Garden, and the Colonnade. Nemours Estate is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM, from April to December. It provides a self-guided experience with staff available to answer questions. The estate underwent a significant restoration from 2005 to 2008, ensuring the preservation of its original splendor.
