The park's location on the summit provides breathtaking vistas stretching across eastern Pennsylvania and into neighboring states. On a clear day, the panorama includes parts of New Jersey and New York. The park's history dates back to Henry S. Cattell, who built a stone cabin on the summit in 1908, offering shelter to those who shared his appreciation for the view. In 1954, after the construction of facilities and the scenic drive around the summit, the area was opened to the public as Big Pocono State Park. Visitors can explore over 8 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. The trails wind through diverse terrain, with the North and South Trails offering a steeper, more rugged experience. For a less strenuous option, the Indian Trail provides scenic views from the eastern cliffs. Mountain biking and horseback riding are permitted on designated trails. The paved, 1.4-mile road encircling the mountaintop is ADA-accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the views. Picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills are scattered throughout the park, providing ideal spots for a mountaintop meal. Big Pocono State Park is open from spring through December. During the fall, the park is a popular destination for leaf peeping, with vibrant colors transforming the landscape.
