Discover more about Nemours Estate

Nemours Estate, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a testament to the vision and grandeur of Alfred I. du Pont. Constructed between 1909 and 1910, the estate was a gift to his second wife, Alicia, and named after the French town associated with his ancestor, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. The 200-acre estate features a 77-room mansion designed in the Louis XVI style by Carrère and Hastings, the same firm behind the New York Public Library and the Frick mansion. The mansion is filled with rare 18th-century French furniture, notable antiques, and an eclectic collection of art and tapestries. Highlights include a Louis XVI musical clock and a clock made for Marie Antoinette. The estate's gardens are equally impressive, inspired by the gardens of Versailles surrounding the Petit Trianon. They are considered the most developed and largest French formal gardens in North America. Visitors can explore the Boxwood Garden, the Colonnade, the Reflecting Pool with its 157 jets, and the Temple of Love, featuring a statue of Diana by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The Sunken Garden is currently closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in 2026. In addition to the mansion and gardens, the estate features a Chauffeur's Garage with a collection of vintage automobiles. Visitors can also explore the grounds, including the Russian Gates from a palace owned by Catherine the Great. Nemours Estate is open to the public from April to December, offering self-guided tours with knowledgeable staff available to answer questions.
