Discover more about Store Dyrehave

Store Dyrehave, or the Great Deer Park, is a sprawling forest located just south of Hillerød in North Zealand, Denmark. This magnificent woodland, easily accessible and rich in history, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Originally established as a royal hunting ground, Store Dyrehave has evolved into a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, providing a tranquil escape into nature. The history of Store Dyrehave dates back to the 17th century when King Christian IV enclosed the area with stone walls between 1619 and 1628 to create a royal deer park. This ensured a steady supply of game for the royal table and a secure environment for the royal horse stud. However, it was King Christian V who truly shaped the forest's distinctive character. Inspired by the grand hunting parties he witnessed at the court of King Louis XIV in France, Christian V introduced the concept of par force hunting to Denmark. In 1680, Christian V implemented a geometrical road system within Store Dyrehave, forming a star with eight branches emanating from a central point. This intricate network of numbered roads facilitated the par force hunting technique, where hunters on horseback would pursue a single deer until it was exhausted, providing a thrilling spectacle for the royal court. Although par force hunting was discontinued in 1777, the road system and numbered stone posts remain fully intact, serving as a testament to this unique chapter in Danish history. Today, Store Dyrehave is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, forming part of the Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Zealand. This prestigious designation acknowledges the forest's exceptional cultural and historical significance, preserving its unique landscape for future generations to appreciate. Visitors can explore the forest's well-maintained trails, which follow the original par force hunting routes, offering a glimpse into the past while immersing themselves in the natural surroundings. The forest itself is a diverse ecosystem, comprising both coniferous and deciduous trees, including towering beech trees that create a stunning canopy overhead. Marshes and pools dot the landscape, providing habitats for various wildlife species. Keep an eye out for deer, rabbits, and numerous bird species as you explore the forest's trails. The diverse flora and fauna make Store Dyrehave a haven for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Store Dyrehave offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages and interests. Hiking is a popular pastime, with numerous marked trails catering to different fitness levels. The trails wind through the forest, leading to historical landmarks, scenic viewpoints, and tranquil picnic spots.
