Deep Forest Art Land, still affectionately known by its original name Skovsnogen, transforms a West Jutland forest into an open-air gallery where contemporary art and wilderness share equal billing. Instead of white walls and spotlights, sculptures rise between spruce trunks, installations hide in glades and bold colours flash through the greenery. The entire exhibition unfolds under the sky, in a privately owned woodland shaped centuries ago by the last Ice Age.What makes the place distinctive is its insistence that art must live by the forest’s rules. Works are exposed to wind, rain and low winter light; some are built to endure, others are meant to fade and decay. Moss creeps up plinths, leaves collect in corners and birdsong replaces gallery hush. As you walk, you are not just viewing art in nature, but watching the slow collaboration between artists and landscape.

Since its creation in 2010 by artists René Schmidt and Søren Taaning, Deep Forest Art Land has accumulated works from dozens of artists, with more than 80 pieces on the main route and new additions appearing regularly. Many installations are large enough to enter, climb or walk through: huts filled with curious interiors, geometric insects, a crushed car pinned by a boulder, and objects that look like they have dropped from another planet. Others are subtle interventions that only reveal themselves when you look twice.The forest is divided into northern and southern sections connected by paths, with a main circuit of roughly 3–3.5 km. Maps at the parking area and at points along the route help you navigate, while yellow arrows mark the primary trail. There is no prescribed order or “correct” way to experience the works; you can linger at a single piece or follow the loop and let surprises appear as you go.

Part of the charm here is how democratic and informal it feels. There is a voluntary admission of around 20 DKK per person, which keeps the experience accessible and relaxed. Dogs are welcome if kept on a leash, and children tend to treat the forest like a fantasy playground, darting between sculptures and crawling into structures. Benches and simple picnic spots invite you to settle down with a packed lunch among the trees.The ground is natural forest terrain, so expect roots, occasional mud and gentle slopes rather than manicured paths. After rain, some stretches can be boggy; sturdy shoes make the walk much more comfortable. For those who prefer more structure, the site offers guided tours and themed walks that focus on particular works or on the relationship between art, landscape and community.

Open daily from late morning to late afternoon, Deep Forest Art Land rewards repeat visits in different seasons. In summer the forest canopy is dense and green, insects hum by the stream and shade makes the brighter artworks almost glow. Autumn coats the paths in leaves and adds another colour palette, while winter strips the forest back to trunks and silhouettes, exposing works you may have missed in high season.Because there is no café or restaurant inside the forest, visitors usually bring food and drinks, or combine the excursion with a meal or overnight stay at nearby inns and guesthouses. A specially designed shelter by an artist can be booked for a basic overnight stay, turning a day trip into a more immersive art-and-nature escape, with the forest to yourself after closing time.

Deep Forest Art Land sits in the countryside south of Herning, not far from the Skjern Å river valley and several small villages. From the parking area on Sdr. Ommevej, you step almost immediately into the trees, leaving fields and roads behind. The setting underscores the project’s aim: to decentralise contemporary art and place it in everyday landscapes, where a family walk or a quiet afternoon outdoors can also be an encounter with ambitious, sometimes challenging installations.This mix of culture, outdoor life and rural scenery has made the forest an anchor point in the region’s creative landscape.
