Rutschebanen
Rutschebanen, Tivoli Gardens
Storybook gardens, vintage coasters and glowing lanterns create Copenhagen’s most magical mix of amusement park, concert venue and seasonal fairytale.
Tivoli Gardens is Copenhagen’s legendary 19th‑century amusement park and pleasure garden, wrapped around lakes, flowerbeds and fantastically lit pavilions right beside the central station. Behind its gates you find vintage wooden roller coasters, high‑tech thrill rides, open‑air concerts, classical performances and ballet, plus more than 30 places to eat, from old‑world restaurants to casual food halls. Seasonal openings for Easter, summer, Halloween and Christmas transform the park with elaborate decorations, markets and nightly lights.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Train and short walk
From anywhere in the Copenhagen region, travel by train to Copenhagen Central Station, the city’s main rail hub. Regional, intercity and S‑train services all stop here, with typical journeys from outlying suburbs taking 10–30 minutes and standard single tickets within the capital area costing roughly 20–40 DKK. Once you arrive, Tivoli’s main entrance is directly opposite the station forecourt, reached on foot in a few minutes on level, paved surfaces suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
City bus
Several city bus lines serve the area around Copenhagen Central Station and the stretch of Vesterbrogade by Tivoli. Travel times from inner districts are usually 10–20 minutes, depending on traffic. A single bus ticket within the central zones costs around 20–30 DKK, and buses generally run every 5–15 minutes during the day, with reduced frequency late at night. Most buses have low floors and space for wheelchairs, but expect them to be busy during rush hour and on peak Tivoli evenings.
Metro and S‑train combination
If you are staying near a metro station, take the metro to Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv and change to an S‑train heading to Copenhagen Central Station. The combined journey normally takes 10–20 minutes across the central area, using the same ticketing system as buses and trains, with single fares in the 20–40 DKK range depending on zones. Trains and metro operate frequently throughout the day and evening, and all stations on this route have modern platforms with lifts or escalators, making this a convenient choice in bad weather.
Bicycle from central districts
Copenhagen’s cycle‑friendly streets make biking to Tivoli straightforward from most central neighborhoods. From areas such as Vesterbro, Nørrebro or Østerbro, expect a 10–25 minute ride on marked cycle lanes almost the entire way. Many hotels and bike‑share schemes rent bicycles, typically from about 100–150 DKK per day. You’ll find bike racks around the perimeter of the gardens, but they can fill up quickly on warm evenings and during major events, so allow extra time to secure a spot.
