Discover more about Day Forest National Park

Day Forest National Park, also known as Forêt du Day National Park, is a captivating natural sanctuary nestled in the Goda Mountains of Djibouti. Established in 1939, this 15-square-kilometer park is a stark contrast to the country's typical desert scenery, offering a refreshing escape into lush greenery and diverse ecosystems. The park's higher elevation creates a cooler, more humid climate, fostering a unique montane forest environment. It's home to Djibouti's only significant forest ecosystem, dominated by juniper trees, wild olive trees, boxwoods, and dragon trees. These botanical patterns are relics of an ancient era when the Sahara was covered in flowers. While climate change has reduced the forest to a fraction of its former size, it remains an important protected area. Day Forest National Park is a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Trails cater to all skill levels, from easy strolls to challenging climbs. The Day Forest Trail, a moderate 8 km hike, takes you through the heart of the forest with stunning views. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including gazelles, warthogs, baboons, and over 60 species of birds. Birdwatchers will be particularly delighted by the chance to spot endemic species like the Djibouti francolin. Culturally significant to the local Afar and Issa communities, Day Forest offers a chance to learn about their traditions. The best time to visit is during the cooler months, from November to April.
