Discover more about Goda

The Goda Mountains, located northwest of the Gulf of Tadjoura in Djibouti, present a remarkable natural contrast to the country's typical desert environment. Rising to a height of 1,750 meters (5,740 feet), these mountains form the largest heavily vegetated area in Djibouti, offering a cool and verdant escape. The name 'Goda' itself, meaning 'twisted' or 'devoured' in the Afar language, refers to the mountains' ridged terrain. The Goda Mountains are home to the Day Forest National Park, Djibouti's only national park, protecting a unique and isolated ecosystem. This park is a crucial refuge for diverse flora and fauna, including the critically endangered Djibouti spurfowl (Djibouti francolin), an endemic bird species. The forests, though diminishing, host East African junipers, boxwood, and wild olive trees. While juniper populations have declined, boxwood has become more prevalent. The area also supports various species of monkeys and deer. Visitors to the Goda Mountains can enjoy hiking trails with panoramic views of the Gulf of Tadjoura and surrounding desert plains. The cooler temperatures offer a refreshing break from the coastal heat, making it ideal for trekking and birdwatching. Several Afar villages are scattered around the mountains, offering a glimpse into local culture and a tranquil lifestyle. However, it's important to note that climate change, grazing, and deforestation pose ongoing threats to the region's biodiversity.
