Discover more about Fort Shirley

Nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, Fort Shirley stands as a testament to the island's rich and complex history. Constructed by the British in 1765, the fort was a key defensive structure in the Lesser Antilles, designed to protect against invasions, especially from the French. Named for Sir Thomas Shirley, it was later expanded by the French during their occupation of Dominica from 1778 to 1784. Built in the Georgian architectural style, the fort comprised over 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, storehouses, and barracks capable of housing over 600 men. Fort Shirley is also notable for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment, when African slave soldiers mutinied to protest poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery. This revolt influenced the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, Fort Shirley remained largely untouched until restoration efforts began in 1982 under Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, climb the walls, and imagine life as a soldier stationed at this remote outpost. The restored Officer's Quarters now serves as a venue for events, offering stunning views of Prince Rupert Bay. Fort Shirley is an integral part of Cabrits National Park, offering hiking, birdwatching, and snorkeling.
