Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, located in Cabrits National Park on Dominica's northern peninsula, is a testament to the island's complex colonial history. Constructed by the British in 1765 and expanded by the French between 1778 and 1784, the fort served as a key defensive structure in the Lesser Antilles. Named for Sir Thomas Shirley, the fort's Georgian architecture originally comprised over 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, and barracks capable of housing 600 men. The fort is most notably known for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment, when African slave soldiers took over the garrison for three days to protest poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery. This revolt influenced the Mutiny Act of 1807, which freed all serving soldiers recruited as slaves in the British Army. Abandoned in 1854, Fort Shirley began undergoing restoration in 1982. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, immersing themselves in the history and natural beauty of the area. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and now hosts events such as weddings and concerts. The fort offers stunning views of Prince Rupert Bay, nearby beaches, and the surrounding mountains.
