Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, located in Cabrits National Park in northern Dominica, is the island's most significant historical site. Constructed by the British starting in 1765, with later expansions by the French, the fort served as a key defense in the Lesser Antilles during the 18th and 19th centuries. Its primary purpose was to deter invasions, particularly from the French. The fort's design, attributed to British Royal Engineers Fraser and Bruce, showcases Georgian architecture and cleverly utilizes the natural defenses of its location within a volcanic crater. The complex originally comprised over 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, storehouses, bakeries, a forge, barracks, and officer quarters, capable of housing up to 600 soldiers. Fort Shirley is also notable as the site of the 1802 revolt by soldiers of the 8th West India Regiment, who were recruited as slaves. This uprising, protesting poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery, led to the emancipation of all slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, the fort underwent restoration starting in 1982 under Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Today, much of the fort is either intact or has been rebuilt, allowing visitors to explore its bastions and imagine its operational days. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and now hosts events like weddings and concerts. The site offers panoramic views of Prince Rupert Bay, nearby beaches, and the surrounding mountains.
