Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, stands as a testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. Constructed in 1765 by the British, the fort was named for Sir Thomas Shirley and served as a key defensive structure for the northern coast of Dominica. The French extended the fort during their occupation from 1778 to 1784. The fort's Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, features over 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, and barracks that once housed over 600 men. Abandoned in 1854, restoration began in 1982, transforming it into a site for tourism, events, and historical exploration. Fort Shirley is also notable for the 1802 revolt of slave soldiers from the 8th West India Regiment, which contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Exploring Fort Shirley today offers visitors a chance to wander through the restored structures, climb the ramparts, and imagine life as a soldier stationed at this remote outpost. Cannons still stand guard, offering stunning views of Prince Rupert Bay and Douglas Bay. Today, the Officer's Quarters has been renovated and is now a venue for weddings, receptions, concerts, and other events. The fort also hosts the annual Dominica Jazz n' Creole Festival, blending history, culture, and music in a unique and vibrant celebration.
