Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, stands as a powerful testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. This meticulously restored 18th-century British garrison offers visitors an immersive journey into the past, where they can explore well-preserved ruins, soak in panoramic views, and contemplate the stories etched into the very stones of this strategic outpost. Construction of Fort Shirley began in 1765 by the British, under the direction of Governor Thomas Shirley, as a key defensive structure to protect the northern coast of Dominica. From 1778 to 1784, the fort was extended by the French during their occupation of Dominica. The fort was built of brick and stone in the Georgian architectural style. It consisted of more than 50 buildings, including seven gun batteries, seven cisterns, powder magazines, and ordnance storehouses, as well as barracks that could house over 600 men. The fort was abandoned in 1854. Fort Shirley is also notable for the 1802 rebellion of slave soldiers from the 8th West India Regiment, which contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Today, much of the fort is intact or has been rebuilt, allowing you to see what the area must have looked like back when the fort was operational. Take a moment to climb the walls, look out from a row of cannons, and imagine setting your sight on ships slowly drifting into range. The Officer's Quarters has undergone a major renovation and is now home to weddings, receptions, concerts, and other events. Beyond its historical significance, Fort Shirley is also an integral part of Cabrits National Park, which was established in 1986 to protect the area's diverse ecosystems. The park encompasses 1,313 acres of land and sea, including tropical forests, coral reefs, and wetlands. Visitors can enjoy hiking, birdwatching, snorkeling, and diving, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
