Discover more about St. Andrew Catholic Church

St. Andrew Catholic Church, nestled in the charming village of Vieille Case on Dominica's northern coast, is more than just a religious building; it embodies the enduring spirit and rich history of the community. Vieille Case, also known as Itassi in the Kalinago language, is a village that showcases a blend of Kalinago, European, and African influences. The church's story began in the mid-19th century when Fr. François Marie Evain, a young priest, arrived in Vieille Case to establish a permanent place of worship. Despite facing challenges, Fr. Evain built a small chapel on the site of the present-day church at his own expense. From the writings of Fr. De Lettree, it is known that Fr. Evain's six years in Vieille Case were filled with sorrow and bitterness, and he was harassed until his health broke down. He passed away in Martinique a few weeks later at the age of 30. For generations, St. Andrew Catholic Church has been a central point for worship, celebrations, and important community events, marking milestones in the lives of many. The church has also played a role in preserving the cultural heritage of Vieille Case, promoting traditional music, dance, and storytelling. The altar, crafted from local stone, stands as a focal point, symbolizing the community's sacred heart. In 2020, the church bells rang again after 17 years, following reconstruction after a major earthquake. Exploring the area around the church reveals the colorful streets and the welcoming smiles of locals, enriching the travel experience. Vieille Case itself has a unique cinematic history, having served as a filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
