Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, located within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, stands as a significant historical landmark. Constructed by the British in 1765, the fort was a key defense in the Lesser Antilles during the 18th and 19th centuries, primarily against French invasions. The Georgian-style architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, housed up to 600 soldiers and included gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, and barracks. Fort Shirley is also notable for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment, where African slave soldiers mutinied to protest poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery. This revolt contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, the fort underwent restoration starting in 1982. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved and rebuilt structures, climb the walls, and imagine life in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and is used for events. The fort offers stunning views of Prince Rupert Bay and the surrounding coastline.
